Clint Capela Signs Extension with Rockets

July 29, 2018

Houston Rockets' center Clint Capela has signed a 5 year, $90 million extension, per Adrian Wojnarowski.  It was reported earlier that Capela was seeking a max deal, but that clearly fell through.  Capela had a breakout year with H-Town last year,  averaging around 14 PPG, 11 RPG and 2 Blocks per game, while shooting 65% from the field.  He was also in contention for Most Improved Player, and was a key contributor to Houston's deep playoff run. Capela is one of the few dominant traditional centers, as he doesn't have much range and is mainly a paint scorer, like Rudy Gobert and DeAndre Jordan. With Capela back, the Rockets are primed for another deep playoff run, and they now have the core of James Harden, Chris Paul and Capela signed through 2022, which gives them a real shot at a championship during that time frame. I think this was a great signing for the Rockets, as they waited it out and got him for much cheaper than I believed he would get. Capela is still young and has time to develop even more, so if he can improve even more, he could be not only a great defensive weapon, but a great offensive one as well.
